Law Enforcement Officials Respond to Gonzalez Nomination
WASHINGTON, D.C. — In response to an announcement that President Joe Biden will nominate Law Enforcement Immigration Task Force co-chair and Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez to lead U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), the following is a statement from fellow LEITF co-chairs Miami Police Chief Art Acevedo; Fresno County, California, Sheriff Margaret Mims; and Orlando, Florida, Police Chief Orlando Rolón:
“Sheriff Gonzalez knows firsthand the importance of a smart immigration approach when it comes to public safety, making him an excellent choice for ICE director. He has spent his career championing smart policies, from supporting a permanent solution for Dreamers to ending agreements that made federal enforcement a local responsibility.
“As law enforcement leaders, Sheriff Gonzalez’s track record is an encouraging indication of how he would run ICE — with a balance of security and compassion that makes everyone safer. We encourage the Senate to quickly confirm him.”
